Are electronic drum kits worth it?

Whether you’re a beginner drummer or a seasoned pro, an electronic drum kit can be a great addition to your arsenal. But are they worth the investment? Let’s look at the pros and cons of electronic drums to help you decide.

The Pros

Quiet

In a traditional acoustic drums set-up, the drummer is often the loudest member of the band, which can be a problem for both the band and the audience. The drummer can play at any volume with an electronic drum kit without disturbing anyone. This makes them perfect for practice sessions or for playing in smaller venues.

Portable

Most kits carry cases or bags, making it easy to transport your gear from gig to gig.  There are even battery-powered models that can be used without an AC outlet. Remember that these sets may have fewer features than their larger counterparts.

Cheaper

Unlike acoustic drums, made of wood and metal, electronic drums are made of plastic and rubber. This makes them much cheaper to manufacture, and as a result, they are much cheaper to buy.

Another factor contributing to the lower cost of electric drums is that they typically have fewer components than an acoustic kit. This means there is less chance of something going wrong and needing to be replaced, which can cost a lot of money.

Variety of Sounds and Tones

You can create any kind of sound, from a soft, gentle sound to a loud, powerful one. You can also use them to create different kinds of rhythms and beats. This makes them perfect for both beginners and experienced musicians alike.

The Cons

Lack of Realism

Many electronic drum sounds use sound samples triggered by sensors on the drum pads. These samples often sound artificial and lack the subtlety and nuance of a real drummer playing an acoustic kit. This can be frustrating for drummers who are used to an acoustic kit’s natural feel and sound.

Regular Maintainance

Electronic drums can be quite delicate and require regular maintenance. The pads and sensors on an electronic drum set can quickly become damaged, and the whole set may need to be replaced if something goes wrong.

Complicated Set-Up

It can take hours to get everything hooked up and working properly, and it can be a real challenge if you’re not familiar with electronic equipment. Once you get it all set up, there’s always the risk that something will go wrong, and you’ll have to start all over again.

The verdict

Yes, electronic drums sounds are definitely worth it. They offer many advantages over traditional drums, including creating sound, practising without making noise, and playing quietly when necessary. Moreover, electronic drums are a lot more versatile than traditional drums. You can use them for any genre of music, from rock to jazz to hip-hop. And if you ever want to change up your sound, you can easily do so by switching out the sounds on your electronic drum set.
